It's a New School Year

It's the 2008-2009 school year. I have a whole new group of second graders ready to post to a blog. We created a new blog called Second Grade Rocks! I have left this blog up for everyone to come back and visit.

Martin Luther King JR by JOSHUA

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a great man of peace. He was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. When he was young, his life was happy and bad. One time two of his friends couldn’t play with him anymore because he had different skin color. Dr. King was an important man because he would fight and fight with words until he got what he wanted for Civil Rights. Dr. King told everybody to march to Washington DC. where he gave his “I Have a Dream” speech. On April 4, 1968 Dr. King was shot with a rifle. Dr. King was a great leader.

Harriet Tubman by: Janelle

Harriet Tubman was a brave leader. She was born in 1820. Slaves were people owned by other people. Harriet Tubman escaped slavery in 1849. She helped many people become free using the Underground Railroad. Tubman died in 1913. She was a important leader because she was a very good person.

I am writing about Abraham Lincoln because he was a brave leader. Lincoln was born in 1809. He and his family were pioneers who lived on farms in Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois. When he was young he didn’t go to school he learned how to read. In his speeches Lincoln said that slavery went against Americans tradition of freedom. When Lincoln was president there was a Civil War because the states were fighting about slaves. Abraham Lincoln died when the war ended. A man called John Wilkes Booth shot him. Abraham was an important president because he stopped slavery.

Frederick Douglass was a great speaker. Douglass was born in 1818. He lived in Maryland as a slave. Slaves were not allowed to be taught. He escaped to the north because some northern states did not have slaves. Douglass worked with Abraham Lincoln. He was a great leader and Douglass spoke against slavery. Frederick Douglass died in 1895. Frederick Douglass was a leader.

Frederick Douglass was a brave leader. He was born in 1818 and lived in Maryland as a slave. Slaves couldn’t go to school. Douglass escaped slavery by going to the north when he was an adult. He met President Lincoln and they worked together to end slavery. Frederick Douglass died in 1895. Frederick was a great hero and believed all people should be free.

Stegosaurus by: Jonathan


Have you ever seen a Stegosaurus before? Millions of years ago Stegosaurus existed on earth. Stegosaurus had plates on its back and had armor. It had a tiny head and spikes on its tail. Stegosaurus lived in Colorado and North America during the Jurassic period. This dinosaur was a herbivore and it got food by standing on two legs. This is the best dinosaur because it could use the spikes on its tail to defend itself.

Seismosaurus is the best because he was so long! Millions of years ago, Seismosaurus roamed the Earth. Seismosaurus had a long neck, long tail, four feet, a small mouth, and long teeth. Seismosaurus is related to Allausaurus. Seismosaurus lived during the Jurassic period. Seismosaurus lived in large, open spaces with gentle, wide valleys, and warm weather. Seismosaurus was a herbivore. It jerked its head back to snap the leaves off. Seismosaurus's name means long neck.

Millions of years ago Tyrannosaurus lived and ruled the Earth . A Compagnathus is related to the T.Rex. A T.Rex had sharp teeth and strong jaws. It was covered with rough, scaly skin. It had strong back legs, but smaller arms. The T.Rex lived during the Cretaceous period and lived in open forests with nearby rivers. The T.Rex was a carnivore . It caught food with a herd sometimes. Tyrannosaurus was a large and fierce dinosaur.

Millions of years ago Apatosaurus roamed the earth. The apatosaurus was one of biggest dino saurs. It was 3 times as big as an elephant. This dinosaur lived in the Jurassic period. The fossils were found in North America. Apat osaurus was an herbivore that ate plants. Its long heck helped it reach tall leaves. Scientists learn about the Apatosaurus from fossils because they are extinct.

Have you ever seen a Triceratops fossil? Millions of years ago, Triceratops lived on Earth. Triceratops had 4 legs, three horns, and a bony frill. The T.Rex could eat the Triceratops. This dinosaur lived on North America during the Cretaceous Period, 165 million years ago. This dinosaur was a herbivore and ate plants. This is the best dinosaur ever because its head was big.

Tyrannosaurus Rex roamed and ruled the Earth millions of years ago. Tyrannosaurus Rex had a huge head with large, pointy, replaceable teeth and well-developed jaw muscles. This dinosaur is related to the Compsognathus. This dinosuar lived during the Cretaceous period. T-Rex lived in the forest. My dinosaur was a carnivore. T-Rex's brain had a very large area for smelling. The name Tyrannosaurus Rex means Tyrant lizard king. It is important to learn about dinosaurs because they teach us how Earth used to look.

Compsognathus is the best dinosaur. Millions of years ago compsognathus lived where it is now Germany and France. Compsognathus had a long, flexible neck, small pointed head, and sharp teeth. This dinosaur had a long tail and long, thin legs. It was about the size of a chicken. Compsogthus is the cousin of T-Rex. This dinosaur lived during the Jurassic Period. The fossils have been found in Europe. This dinosaur was a Carnivore. It caught and ate small animals including insects and lizards. The name copsognathus means 'pretty jaw''.

Triceratops is the best! Millions of years ago Triceratops roamed the Earth. Triceratops has three long horns, a tooth less mouth, a neck shied, and a beak. Triceratops is related to Styracosaurus. Many of these dinosaurs lived in North America. Triceratops lived during the Cretaceous period. It was a herbivore. It had a beak so it could break twigs and leaves. Triceratops means three horned face.

The Anklyosaurus is the greatest armored dinosaur. Millions of years ago Anklyosaurus ruled the Earth. Anklyosaurus had a bony back, was larger than an elephant, and was long and spikey. It was related to Amotosaurs and the Sauroplites. The dinosaurs lived during the Cretaceous Period and lived in the high land, among hills, and valleys. There were no forests, just bushes and a few trees and cool weather. Anklyosaurus was a herbivore, it ate soft plants with its dull teeth. This is the life of the great armored Anklyosaurus.

T-rex is the best of all the dinosaurs! Millions of years ago the dinosaur named Tyrannosaurus Rex lived in a place now called North America and Mongolia. Tyrannosaurus had tiny arms with two fingers. It had a huge skull and walked on two legs with three toes. It had sharp teeth and was 40 feet long and 20 feet tall. Tyrannosaurus is related to Compsognathus. It lived in the forest near swamps and humid rivers. T-rex was a carnivore and ate herbivores. T-rex had a large brain that smelled from far away.
